Living in Stratford

Stratford is famous not only for sharing a name with the home of William Shakespeare, but also for hosting a highly successful drama festival that honours the bard's plays. Started in the mid 1950s, the Stratford Festival has dominated the summer life of the city as tourists flood in for a day or two of plays, shopping, and relaxation. Four theatres provide venues for the festival, while historical buildings in the downtown core house a variety of boutique shopping and restaurants. Stratford has a population of over 30,000 people, but during festival season thousands of visitors flood through the city for a day, week, or month.

Stratford is a study in contrasts, since the city's centre is dominated by the festival (and everything is accordingly priced high), while the city's suburban areas are home to middle-class neighourhoods a world away from the festival's glitz and excitement. This double character means the city is liveable year-round for renters, not just during festival season. Conestoga College and Laurel College both have campuses in the city and elementary and high school students are well served. Stratford is located approximately 30 km west of Kitchener and the two cities are connected by Highway 8, which is four lanes almost all the way from Kitchener to Stratford. Goderich is 60 km west of Stratford on Lake Huron. Woodstock is about 25 km south, while London is 55 km southwest or about 45 minutes driving time. Stratford is not directly accessible by 400-series highways-getting there takes time, but the visitor is well rewarded.
